Senior Business Development Manager (EMAR region)

Our client is a large international oil & gas services company that work on major international construction projects. They have engaged with Simpson-Booth exclusively to help them hire a Senior Business Development Manager for the EMAR region. This position can be based from any major European hub, but ideal locations include: Paris, Amsterdam, London, Leiden, Edinburgh or Aberdeen (due to clientele locations/industry hubs).

Reports to: Vice President, Business Development EMAR

Department: Business Development & Marketing

Position Summary:

  • Responsibility for business development in certain markets within the EMAR region (plant and field pipe coating)
  • Win responsibility for all projects within the defined markets, direct and indirect development of win strategies
  • Using knowledge of the market and competitors, identify and develop the company's unique selling propositions and differentiators.
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of current market conditions
  • Responsible for identifying and proposing strategic alliances or JV's to senior management where appropriate to gain an advantage in our major project pursuits
  • Direct initiatives for bundle solution sales to leverage the Performance group to our clients
  • Develop studies and strategies for geographic expansion and new platform entry for responsible market areas
  • Track project forecasts, pricing, product line sales across assigned market area.
  • Responsible for maintaining and developing relationships with key customers.
  • Generate M&A leads

Main responsibilities include:

1) Develop Business Planning:

  • Develop market segment sales strategy and project specific "win" strategies. Responsible for managing local Business Development and coordinating with Key Account Manager functions.
  • Position the company to enter the next level of business opportunities in the market place.
  • Identify and propose strategic alliances and/or JV's to senior management to help our value proposition for the major project pursuits
  • Identify local partners in our developing geographies

2) Perform Market Analysis:

  • Responsible for developing existing business and identifying and developing new market growth opportunities, within assign market area, by analysing changing trends and competitive information using financial feasibility studies, market research and planning.
  • Develop a "win strategy" that encompasses the use of financial feasibility studies, market research and planning.

3) Sales Activities:

  • Leads BD initiatives and coaches local BD Managers in successful execution of Business/Strategic/Market plan objectives.
  • Leads and assists negotiation and closing functions for bids.
  • Leads and assists in direct sales presentation of the full range of the products to existing and prospective major accounts.
  • Directs sales initiative for existing and new market opportunities.

4) Maintain Client Relations:

  • Regularly have direct meetings with managers in the oil and gas industry.
  • Responsible for resolution of customer complaints/claims.

5) Technology:

  • Responsible to provide recommendations and support the development of new products and acquisitions.

6) Supervision:

  • Supervises local BD Managers, for all company products in both onshore and offshore sectors.
  • Oversee sales efforts within defined geographic market areas including product or technical inquiries, pricing inquiries, product presentations and development of selling strategies.
  • Responsible for training and motivation of employees.
  • Propose attendance and participation at key conferences.

7) Industry Involvement:

  • Maintain and improve company recognition within business and professional organisations.

Skills & experience required:


  • B.Sc. (Engineering or Business)
  • MBA preferred


  • Oversee sales and influence bid activity
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Human relations and general management skills, with ability to operate within all levels of an organization
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent understanding of marketing principles
  • Excellent sales skills with ability to develop and nurture new client relations

Working conditions:

  • Travel required – 50%
  • Office Environment plus regular field visits
  • Can be high stress job meeting deadlines, business and customer expectations
